Polack in 10 Minutes: Podcast
We're continuing our audiotrips around significant Belarusian cities. Today we're traveling to Polack, the oldest city in Belarus, which for more than a thousand years has rubbed through dark times and rejoiced over its victories.
In the history of Belarus, Polack truly is the cradle of culture and nationhood. The walls of Saint Sophia Cathedral in Polack gave a start to the national school of architecture, and the figure of Francysk Skaryna marked the beginning of the Belarusian book culture. Polack of Rahvalod times remembers the first steps of statehood and even the international economy – the steps taken on the route "from the Varangians to the Greeks''. All in all, here, on Polack lands, Rahnieda and Euphrosyne had taken control of all state matters even before the first wave of feminism. It is the city of enlightenment, but also the city of miracles, because it was ruled by Usiaslaŭ the Sorcerer, and historians still wrestle with the mystery of the Boris Stones.
